Spiffy @ BURN2 Winter Burn 31/01/2021

For a change, I was able to get plenty of photos taken for this visit to BURN2, which is great because words along cannot fully describe the creativity (and craziness) on display on the Playa! πŸ™‚

The theme of this year’s event was ‘Bubblegum & Duct-tape”, so there was much pink gooeyness and tape replacing the roads.

I took these photos on the day before I was due to perform, so it was marginally less laggy walking around the region and I could get unobstructed views of the various builds.

Suffice to say, there were a lot of Bernie Sanders meme pictures dotted around! I guess the Burners decided that he was perfect for a winter festival. πŸ™‚

Incidentally, that last picture is the installation of Patrick Moya, who has an entire region of his own full of his wonderfully surreal creations. He’s in the bottom right of the photo, by the way. πŸ™‚

I caught the end of one of the Saturday DJ shows, which was followed by a live performance by the Changhigh Sisters. They are regulars at just about every BURN2 event I’ve been to, and for once I was able to both watch the show and take some photos. These stills don’t really do them full justice, their performance combines dance, acrobatics and a lot of pyrotechnics!

My show was on the Sunday from 12pm to 2pm SLT, and once again I simulcast it on Gorean Whip Radio. There was a small technical hitch at the start where the radio didn’t get switched to my DJ stream right away, but everything went smoothly at my end. I say ‘smoothly’, but that was because for the most part I had my Firestorm Viewer setting cranked down so that I could still type and control my broadcast setup!

There was a large crowd during my show, and they enjoyed the mix of soul, funk and disco. πŸ™‚ Later on, I was able to bring up my viewer settings enough to snap some photos of the partygoers β€” lots of sexy pixels on display!

I had a great time, and will definitely be back for the next BURN2 event!

Spiffy’s New Year’s Day 2021 show on Gorean Whip Radio

This show was broadcast from 12pm SLT on the 1st January 2021, at the WHIP Club House in Second Life. I’d considered doing this show in the early AM, but logistics plus a likely lower listening audience ruled that out.

Part of the playlist was recycled from the one I did for New Year’s Day 2020 because I feel they’re good songs that symbolize a new beginning. πŸ™‚

The first track is a poem that I first discovered several decades ago, and have kept as a text file across multiple computers since then. It was originally written by Mike Agranoff, and I found the audio version on SoundCloud. It is very much a New Year’s Eve song, but works just as well on the following day in my opinion.

The final song, ‘Imagine‘ by John Lennon, is my go-to song for optimism, and one I’ve played whenever I want to convey hope for the future.

And yes, I sneaked in some classical music. πŸ˜€ I find ‘The Blue Danube‘ both uplifting and relaxing.

Christmas Eve 2020 Spiff-tacular!

Okay, making a note here, next time stop at three hours, or else do it in the AM on Christmas Day. I didn’t log out of Second Life until after midnight UK time, and didn’t get to sleep until nearly 1am! 😫

But on the plus side, I had a load of fun putting this show together, with a little help from Apple Music. πŸ™‚ Pulled together soul, jazz and reggae covers of various Christmas songs and carols, plus some of my favourite songs of the season. And yes, a couple of songs get repeated in different versions. πŸ˜›

I’m now taking a break from DJ-ing and radio until the New Year. Hope you’re all staying safe out there!

Opening Ceremony @ SL Sci-Fi Expo

That was a blast, literally! πŸ™‚ Not only one of the biggest audiences I’ve had for one of my Gorean Whip Radio shows, but also one of the biggest audiences I’ve had in-world too. Of course, the flip-side of that was lag, and lots of it, to the point where I had to switch away from Firestorm to get my streamer controls to respond! But I soldiered through, and had a load of fun riffing off the crowd in front of me.

Benjamin Brougham, the organizer and lead for the Sci-Fi Expo, provided me with a list of songs he wanted to be played during the ceremony, plus a prepared speech to broadcast. (We’d discussed the possibility of doing that live over Discord, but given that I knew it would be laggy I suggested that he pre-record instead.) I filled around that playlist with my selection of themes from TV shows and films. πŸ™‚

I wasn’t expecting to have such a nice DJ booth, nor have a light-show to accompany it. Thanks to the Sci-Fi Expo team for arranging that. πŸ™‚

And this evening they dropped a new promo video for the event, which features the audio of the audio promo I created earlier this week for Gorean Whip Radio. πŸ˜€

Yes, that’s my voice! πŸ˜€

Spiffy @ Burnstock – 25/07/2020

This past Saturday, following my DJ show at Coghaven the previous day, I did a performance at BURN2 in Second Life as part of their Burnstock weekend, which was raising money towards supporting the region and funding their Big Burn in October.

Like many real-world events, the annual Burning Man had to be cancelled due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. But its online arm, BURN2, has been picking up the slack with many virtual events throughout the year.

I’ve been to quite a few BURN2 events in Second Life over the past couple of years, but this was my first time performing there.

The screenshot below shows me at the front of the stage with the crowd dancing on the Playa. Behind me there were lots of stage lights and a big screen, you can make out some of the light beams above me.

DJ Spiffy performing at the Burnstock music stage at BURN2 in Second Life

The highlight of my show, however, was that I got to introduce these guys to the stage!

Goddess Oksana & Six Seconds To Russia, rawking out! πŸ™‚

If you’ve never heard Goddess Oksana or her band Six Seconds To Russia performing in Second Life, you’re missing out β€” they’re a full rock back jamming out from a studio in New York, doing covers of rock and pop songs in their own unique style. πŸ™‚ In the photo above, Oksana is flanked by Lars and Tomas. Behind her, Gunter is on the drums, Tatty and Mariko are on keyboards, and Svetlana is on the saxaphone. I go to their shows whenever I can. πŸ™‚

Below is the recording of my set. I went with a mix of techno, house and assorted electronica. It’s a little bit shorter than normal, as I needed to make sure I finished on time, and you’ll hear me hop off stage early so that SSTR could set up their equipment on the stage.

Spiffy @ City of Coghaven – 24/07/2020

The City of Coghaven, a gathering point for robotic and doll avatars and the people who enjoy their company, is celebrating its 11th anniversary with a week of events. I was asked if I could DJ on the opening day of the celebration last Friday by Silverrain Sucettes, the CEO and owner of the region.

It’s an area that I’m familiar with, even as it has changed and moved across the SL Grid a few times over the years. πŸ™‚

Sadly, I wasn’t able to take any pictures during the event β€” due to the number of cybernetic and doll avatars present, I was battling lag just DJ-ing, chatting and finding song requests!

[For those unfamiliar with Second Life, many people use scripted devices attached to their avatars to enhance their roleplay experience. These devices allow for the modification of avatar’s speeech and movement, as well as their control by others.]

If you’d like to have a look around the celebration area, start here at the entrance to Sucette Airlines HQ. You have a few more days before the celebration winds down.

The recording of my DJ set is below. I took quite a few song requests, which are shown in italics. I chose a mix of sci-fi songs, mashups and general silliness. πŸ™‚
