Spiffy @ BURN2 VRC Week opening – 30/08/2020

As promised, here is the recording of my show from BURN2 which took place yesterday at 12pm SL Time.

I was the first act on after the opening, which was pretty cool. Sadly, I only had one hour to perform this time around, as the Fashionistas were doing their show at 1pm, but I continued broadcasting on Gorean Whip Radio after my set time was up.

As you’ll hear from my voice-overs, there were many colourful characters attending. Sadly, the lag meant that I was having enough trouble just typing in chat, let alone taking any snapshots, so all the picture you’ll see here were from the soft opening on Saturday 29th with some areas still under construction.

Spiffy @ Burnstock – 25/07/2020

This past Saturday, following my DJ show at Coghaven the previous day, I did a performance at BURN2 in Second Life as part of their Burnstock weekend, which was raising money towards supporting the region and funding their Big Burn in October.

Like many real-world events, the annual Burning Man had to be cancelled due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. But its online arm, BURN2, has been picking up the slack with many virtual events throughout the year.

I’ve been to quite a few BURN2 events in Second Life over the past couple of years, but this was my first time performing there.

The screenshot below shows me at the front of the stage with the crowd dancing on the Playa. Behind me there were lots of stage lights and a big screen, you can make out some of the light beams above me.

DJ Spiffy performing at the Burnstock music stage at BURN2 in Second Life

The highlight of my show, however, was that I got to introduce these guys to the stage!

Goddess Oksana & Six Seconds To Russia, rawking out! 🙂

If you’ve never heard Goddess Oksana or her band Six Seconds To Russia performing in Second Life, you’re missing out — they’re a full rock back jamming out from a studio in New York, doing covers of rock and pop songs in their own unique style. 🙂 In the photo above, Oksana is flanked by Lars and Tomas. Behind her, Gunter is on the drums, Tatty and Mariko are on keyboards, and Svetlana is on the saxaphone. I go to their shows whenever I can. 🙂

Below is the recording of my set. I went with a mix of techno, house and assorted electronica. It’s a little bit shorter than normal, as I needed to make sure I finished on time, and you’ll hear me hop off stage early so that SSTR could set up their equipment on the stage.

Tracklist:

Digeridoo — The Aphex Twin
Clear — Cybotron
Lowride — Autechre
Let’s Get Brutal — Nitro Deluxe
Cobolt — Jeff Mills
Tribal Confusion (Inhalation Mix) — E-Culture
Aftermath — Nightmares On Wax
Time to Find Me (Afx Fast Mix) — Seefeel
Drill — Speedy J
Phlax — Jega
From Beyond — Psyche
Technology — Carl Craig
Think City — Luke Slater
Flash Food — Infiniti
The Warning — Suburban Knight
Operation Costs — Lusine
We Are Back — LFO
You Could Feel The Sky — Boards of Canada
Blade Runner (End Titles) — Vangelis

Spiffy @ City of Coghaven – 24/07/2020

The City of Coghaven, a gathering point for robotic and doll avatars and the people who enjoy their company, is celebrating its 11th anniversary with a week of events. I was asked if I could DJ on the opening day of the celebration last Friday by Silverrain Sucettes, the CEO and owner of the region.

It’s an area that I’m familiar with, even as it has changed and moved across the SL Grid a few times over the years. 🙂

Sadly, I wasn’t able to take any pictures during the event — due to the number of cybernetic and doll avatars present, I was battling lag just DJ-ing, chatting and finding song requests!

[For those unfamiliar with Second Life, many people use scripted devices attached to their avatars to enhance their roleplay experience. These devices allow for the modification of avatar’s speeech and movement, as well as their control by others.]

If you’d like to have a look around the celebration area, start here at the entrance to Sucette Airlines HQ. You have a few more days before the celebration winds down.

The recording of my DJ set is below. I took quite a few song requests, which are shown in italics. I chose a mix of sci-fi songs, mashups and general silliness. 🙂

Spiffy’s Birthday Special Show – 08/07/2020

Yesterday was my 52nd birthday in Real Life, so I decided to go find out what was the UK No.1 single for this week in each year since I was born. 🙂

Some gems in there, plus a few surprises. Also, a lot of ‘WTF?’ songs, which I decided not to play. Though I might throw those into a future show… 😉

Truth be told, some of the more recent entries served to remind me how out-of-touch I am with current ‘pop’ music. Then again, I’d rather listen to (and purchase) stuff that speaks to me, and not follow the crowd. 🙂

Spiffy’s Sunday Supplement – 28/06/2020

I had a hiccup with the broadcast, the sound cut out at my end and then the music froze while I was rerouting the audio, so I had to stop and start the streamer to get things going again. Thankfully, I didn't lose the recording, and was able to stitch the whole show together again once I was off-air. —Spiffy

I decided to go with a New Jack Swing theme for today’s show. 🙂 It was fun to put together the playlist, and I’ve not heard some of these songs in a very long time. Yes, there is some fruity language in the lyrics, just so you know. 😉

Road Trip Iiin Spaaace!!!

Yesterday, I performed a one-hour set at the Spin-Masters Stage at SL17B, Second Life’s 17th birthday celebration. The theme for this year’s party is ‘Vacations & Road Trips’, so I decided to put my own spin on it with my playlist. 🙂

I’d performed at SL16B last year, so I knew what to expect. I had to arrive an hour before my set, do a sound check backstage with the stage organisers to make sure my streamer settings were good, get my performer lanyard, and let them know how I wanted to be announced and what style I’d be doing.

I did an hour’s warm-up on Gorean Whip Radio, then performed a simulcast at SL17B, so I was broadcasting both there and across Second Life via Gorean Whip Radio.

Sadly, I was too busy with DJ-ing and chatting in-world to take any snapshots. Not that it would have looked great, mind you, I had to dial down the appearance of everyone else there in order to keep my Alchemy viewer responsive.

However, I can show you the new profile picture I made, which is now on my Second Life profile as well as my DJ tip-jar. 🙂

DJ Spiffy – Half Alien, Half Machine, ALL FABULOUS!!!
The Broadest Beats In Second Life!

I recorded the full audio of the two hours, and made it available to listen to below. Please note that this is for personal use only, and not for distribution. There are a few advert breaks in the first hour, plus lots of me gabbing on the mic! 😀

I’m A Podcaster!

Update 2020-08-10: sadly, the lockdown and its effects on my mental health derailed my plans for the podcast. Rather than keep throwing money at hosting, I’ve archived the one episode for posterity to a new location, and removed it from the iTunes Podcast Directory for now. I hope to restart it later in the year. —Spiffy

Sooo… yesterday, I went and made a thing…

It just so happened that 18th February is my rez-day, and the fifth anniversary of my first entering Second Life. So it felt like the right time to take this step. 🙂
